Climate-fueled water scarcity has led California to adopt standards for reusing treated wastewater for everyday use in homes for potable use, Washington Post reports.

This is not exactly a toilet to tap approach. Reuse standards are in some instances more protective than those for drinking water. I believe it is a viable solution for water-scarce regions.
