A first-ever international summit focused on providing clean cooking access to more than 1 billion people in Africa mobilized $2.2 billion in financial pledges from governments and the private sector.

The International Energy Agency, the host, described this as "unprecedented resources" to tackle the challenge. But needs are much bigger: $4 billion per year in capital investments by 2030, it said.
